Job Title: Psychiatrist (Locum Tenens)
Location: Upstate/Downstate New York Pay Rate: ● Forensic Psychiatrist – $250/hour ●
Job Summary:
The New York State Office of Mental Health (OMH) is seeking a Board-Certified Psychiatrist to provide comprehensive psychiatric care across inpatient, outpatient, adult, child/adolescent, and forensic settings. Responsibilities include evaluation, diagnosis, treatment planning, medication management, and coordination of care for individuals with psychiatric disorders. This is a Locum Tenens (independent contractor) role requiring strong clinical expertise, professionalism, and the ability to work effectively within interdisciplinary treatment teams. Minimum Requirements: 1. Enrollment in CMS with unconditional Medicare/Medicaid provider status (OPRA-compliant). 2. Board Certification in Adult Psychiatry (ABPN); Child & Adolescent Psychiatry certification required if working primarily with youth. 3. Minimum of 3 years post-residency clinical experience in psychiatry. 4. Enrollment with NYS Medicaid as a Billing Provider or ORA Prescriber. 5. Enrollment in NYS I-STOP/PMP. 6. Ability to obtain and maintain hospital privileges (if required) and responsibility for related fees. 7. Agreement to assign insurance reimbursements for OMH patient care to OMH. 8. Active New York State medical license in good standing; must notify OMH of any changes. 9. Compliance with OMH and Joint Commission credentialing and privileging requirements. 10. Ability to perform clinical duties with minimal supervision.
Key Responsibilities:
Clinical Duties: ● Provide ethical, safe, and high-quality psychiatric care. ● Conduct psychiatric evaluations, physical exams, and diagnostic assessments. ● Review medical records, prior evaluations, and diagnostic tests. ● Diagnose psychiatric disorders and develop individualized treatment plans. ● Prescribe and monitor medications. ● Provide individual and group therapy. ● Order diagnostic tests as needed. ● Assess patients for admission, transfer, and discharge. ● Collaborate with treatment teams, families, caregivers, and external providers. ● Maintain accurate clinical documentation (progress notes, case histories, discharge summaries). ● Attend staff meetings and participate in medical committees. Program & Team Responsibilities: ● Work collaboratively within multidisciplinary treatment teams. ● Participate in treatment planning and care coordination. ● Ensure continuity of care during transitions or community placements. ● Provide Physician-On-Duty (POD) coverage as required. ● Follow site-specific OMH procedures and policies. ● Use OMH-approved EMR and documentation systems.
Provide psychiatric care to justice-involved individuals (IST, NGRI, secure treatment). ● Conduct forensic and suicide assessments; telepsychiatry may be required. ● No prior forensic training required; OMH provides supervision. Additional Requirements: ● Compliance with OMH health and immunization requirements (PPD, chest X-ray, MMR, flu vaccines as applicable). ● Compliance with HIPAA and federal/state regulations. ● Return OMH property at the end of the assignment. ● Maintain active malpractice and liability insurance. Contract Details: ● Locum Tenens – Independent Contractor ○ No overtime or paid breaks. ○ Must follow OMH scheduling and shift requirements. ○ No-shows or late arrivals without notice may result in removal from assignment. ○ OMH reserves the right to terminate the assignment for cause.
